The Fan

Liu Lianbo, calligraphy teacher, inscribed the fan. The poem by Tang Dynasty writer Li Bai (701-762) called “Leaving Baidi City by Dawn,” describes traveling down the Yangtze River.

From the walls of Baidi, high in dawn’s cloud-colors,
To Jiangling by night-fall is three hundred miles.
Yet monkeys still call on both banks behind me
My boat already ten thousand mountains away.

Calligraphy teacher, Wang Tongxing, with a fan he painted. Both men have central roles in “Writing in Water.”
Mr. Liu and his self-inscribed everyday fan.
